Before they reach the settlement, they are a Callie's Mountain by Katt Anderson In Callie Trent travels with her parents in a wagon train to the frontier of Tennessee. Before they reach the settlement, they are attacked by three of the meanest men from the ridge, three Melungeons. Callie learns about the Melungeons and becomes interested in their history.
No one knows when they came to the ridge. They are strange in physical appearance and in their ways. There is much prejudice against them. She befriends one family and teaches them to read and write. Jacob falls in love with Callie and wants to marry her, but she does not encourage him.
She wants to teach school before she marries, but the three Melungeon men have other plans for her. After reading this book I was and am inspired to do some more research about the Melungeon people, their history, and where they are now. There has been a surge of interest over the last few years and there are dozens of articles about genetic research they are doing with the Melungeons, in hopes it will be discovered where they came from.
Callie is a girl who would like to make her own choices especially in what man she will marry. She is a bit stubborn but kind, loving, and gentle. After tragedy strikes her family she does her best to help her mother and siblings. She is a genuine Christian and lives out what she believes. Jacob is a good man. He wants to marry Callie and spends much of his time preparing a home for her, designing it specifically for her convenience.
He, too, is a Christian and lives his faith but he is also willing to protect others using force when they are attacked by Indians. Callie sometimes drove me a little crazy, like I am sure she did Jacob, with her back and forth, I-love-him-but-I-won't-marry-him. Jacob handles this little bit of leftover childhood very well with love and lots of patience.

When Callie arrives with her family in Tennessee, she discovers that her father has arranged a marriage for her with the son of a good friend. One person found this helpful.
Callie is only 17, and while that was an adult in the 's, sometimes a little bit of childishness does creep in. But, hey, who of us even older doesn't do that once in awhile? This book reminded of a cross between the Christy TV series and an old 's's Colonial Frontier movie with Gary Cooper, or the like. So if you love those old movies with forts, Indian attacks, romance, danger, family, and some interesting history, Callie's Mountain is a good choice.
Callie's Mountain is book 1 in the Melungeon Series. For anyone who has lived around the Rogersville, Tennessee area's this story will come to life in your mind. For those who haven't, well you will still enjoy to read this heart stirring tale. I am an Australian who went to live in and appreciate those beautiful mountains and valley's.
This story took me back to pioneer days. To the Indians and a slower harder working way of life that has become lost in todays hurried world. This was a time when people were gen Simply beautiful This was a time when people were genuine and derived much pleasure from socialising and helping one another.
A beautiful part of this story is the telling of the Melungeon people. A mixture of European, Indian and black slaves who settled among the growing population and incorporated well with the people of the area. They are sweetly woven into this story and add much desired flavour, although in reality, they didn't come to settle there until over a hundred years after this tale. I found it beautiful the way Katt Anderson described the lives and way of living from those bygone days. Your subcriptions will sync with your account on this website too.
