Now while I understand this was a stand alone novel, the characters have gone through development in the Night Huntress series world previous to this. She is also unfortunately suffering the consequences of a late late family member who trifled with a demon, took part of it's power and then bolted. Gipping the demon from his price for giving it's power, the late family members soul. As punishment the demon is going to each of Denise's family members and killing them via heart attacks.
Luckily for Denise she has connections with the underworld and soon hooks up with Spade! Bones' Cat's husband's best friend. I'm not going to lie I always wanted these two to get together ever since he gives Denise a interested look in Book 3, but Denise was then married to Randy. Which left me kind of feeling like the author killed Randy off just so Denise could be with Spade and so Spade would no longer be lonely. It irked me a tiny bit, but on the other hand it shows how dangerous their world is, and shows logical outcomes of that, Randy's death.
Overall this book left the couple getting together feeling a tiny bit forced, and in my opinion I felt like they had little chemistry. I kind of would have preferred them just being friends.
I absolutely love the new character introduced and can't wait to read more about him. Cat does eventually become a vampire in order to ensure that she would be with Bones forever as well as to assuage growing fears in the ghoul population that she was not intending to become a ghoul-vampire hybrid with unprecedented powers. But when Denise has trouble reaching her, she reluctantly turns to the one person who would know Cat's where-abouts--the powerful, mysterious, and sexy as hell vampire, Spade. Both Denise and Spade are fun, brave, loyal characters. The next book in this series is Mencheres's book. Spade and Denise are magic, their chemistry jumps off the page. She tries to help, only for him to have to rescue her from the ghouls, who attempt to eat her.
They were good friends. I liked Spade better as a character when he was single than a drooling-over-Denise Spade. At least he isn't love-zombified to the point that he gives her whatever she wants, and neither is Denise. Which is why, again, I say they should have been friends, but I digress. We get to learn more about Denise, who was a bit of an unknown character; all we kind of knew was that she was Cat's best friend.
You are here: Home / Night Huntress World / First Drop Of Crimson “Book by book, Frost builds her reputation as an author who delivers only the best.”. First Drop of Crimson (Night Huntress World, #1) . But I recommend you read the first four books in the Night Huntress series where we have Denise best friend .
She has the stereotypical southern girl personality and surprise surprise she has a temper. Although this may be amplified by something else Without giving too much away I will say the ending was fresh and a nice surprise. I absolutely love the new character introduced and can't wait to read more about him.
I'd previously read the first two Night Huntress books, and really loved Cat and Bones. At least he isn't love-zombified to the point that he gives her whatever she wants, and neither is Denise. Which is why, again, I say they should have been friends, but I digress.

There were things I liked about this book, but it had problems as well. The main one was I never warmed to Denise. She seemed bland and focused on all the wrong things like her hair and makeup and endless internal dialogue rehashing the same things over and over. I never got a sense of who she was beyond her sexual attraction for Spade and her fear of a shadowy, totally undeveloped, antagonist.
More on that later. She developed a backbone in the last chapter of the book, but by then it was too late because I didn't care what happened to her anymore. It's too bad, because Spade made a phenomenal leading man.
Just the right blend of alpha with pure sex appeal. I kept rooting for him to find a partner other than Denise, which isn't good in a romance. From a technical perspective, there were many things repeated, so editing could have been improved. My other pet peeve was the plot wandered. Frost is a better writer than this book suggests.
The antagonist makes a cameo appearance at the front end of the book, and shows up one other time before the end, but he never felt like much of a threat because his time "on stage" was so limited. Overall, I found this a lackluster read, but I haven't given up on her books.
Audible Audiobook Verified Purchase. In this book we get Denise's story. She tragically lost her husband and wanted nothing more from the supernatural world, including being Kat's friend. So when the supernatural world literally comes knocking on her front door and bringing more death and destruction than she has ever known it is up to Spade to save her. He is a reluctant hero and this is the last thing he wants until he realizes that Denise is worth the trouble and then some. I wanted to love this story and I did try to but it was just okay for me.
Don't get me wrong I did like it, it just didn't jump off the page for me. I am still a huge fan of all things Jeaniene Frost and I can't wait to read the next book in this amazing series. One person found this helpful. I'm not going to go into too much detail but, I agree with many of other reviewer's that liked the book generally and thought Spade was an excellent leading man, Denise; the heroine, left a lot to be desired. I didn't hate her, she was just mildly irritating and frequently irrational.
What, I assume, was supposed to be her being strong, came off unreasonable and rather bitchy. She asked for some heavy favors from the hero, and was constantly complaining about how he went about helping her, even though he knew how to best nevigate his very brutal world. She would rather prove that she was independent, than play a part in front of his subordinates and peers, this put them both in danger. And, didn't help their covert operations to find the person she needed to save her family. The romance portion of the book is pretty much ruined when you don't really want the romantic interests to get together.

The book Eternal Kiss of Darkness follows Mencheres as he attempts to seek death in order to avoid a confrontation with the corrupt law guardian Radjedef, his uncle and old enemy.
He chooses this path partly because he has stopped having visions of the future, except to show darkness coming. Kira comes across Mencheres as he waits for a pack of ghouls to tire of torturing him and kill him. She tries to help, only for him to have to rescue her from the ghouls, who attempt to eat her. Mencheres attempts to erase Kira's memories of the incident, but fails due to her having a natural immunity to vampire mind control.
He keeps her prisoner for a week in the hope that she will fall under his power, and when she doesn't, lets her go after healing her sister's lung damage from cystic fibrosis in exchange for her silence on the existence of vampires. Kira decided to seek him out due to her feelings toward him, but falls afoul of a trio of vampires in an incident which ends with Radjedef sentencing Kira to death, which inflames Mencheres' animosity towards Radjedef.
Mencheres carries out the sentence himself, exploiting a loophole in the law, which doesn't preclude him bringing her back as a vampire. While Kira adjusts to her new life, Radjedef kills the three vampires and arranges for a surveillance video showing Mencheres turning Kira to be found by humans, making it appear as if Mencheres had endangered the secrecy of the vampire race, for which he would be executed. While on the run, Kira and Mencheres begin a relationship, which is complicated by his belief that he is soon to die whether he seeks it or not.
Kira and Mencheres eventually set up a plan to expose Radjedef's corruption and put an end to the rivalry. The book ends with the death of Radjedef and Mencheres recalling that Kira's name was Celtic for "Darkness", and realizing that she was what he saw filling his future. Critical reception for Night Huntress has been predominantly positive, with Library Journal frequently praising the series.
