This is one of them.
Cute, fairly comprehensive baby name book. Jun 12, Rhonda rated it really liked it. Love this book as a reference!!! Great tools for the dreamer's life!! Feb 17, Devon Munn rated it really liked it. This is one of the three books that feeds my obsession with names, however don't entirely trust what the meaning of the names given in the book, I've read some reviews saying that some of the meanings behind the names are incorrect, so only read the names and their variations, skip over the meanings, however, if your looking for a book or names, I'd probably recommend this one.
Jan 18, Anne Hamilton rated it it was ok Shelves: I know a lot of people who consider this their favourite book of names. However, I agree with Brooke's review when she says: Of all the many name books I have, I regard this as the least useful. And that's saying something because many of the books I have are truly spartan in their approach to the background of names and often list simply one word as the meaning.
Sometimes I can see where Astoria has had a lea I know a lot of people who consider this their favourite book of names. Sometimes I can see where Astoria has had a leap of insight and I nod to myself over the spiritual significance. But generally I am baffled by the level of misinformation, assumption and guesswork. I'm not against guessing - I use it a lot when I am trying to work out the original meaning of a name - but it needs to be backed up by at least circumstantial evidence, if not "proof".
Not even circumstantial evidence is apparent here. Apr 29, A. Moses Levitt rated it liked it. Apr 23, Jeffrey Hammerhead rated it it was amazing Shelves: Great book for the meaning of people's names. It is always amazing to see someone light up hearing what God says about their name. If you are using this to name your child take a deep look at the gifts and blessing that God makes for the life your bringing into this world and His Kingdom. I recommend this book to every Parent, Grandparent, and Pastor out there.
The book has a lot of information about each name. The name meanings are focused on the bible and scriptures. But, what I consider a serious flaw is that they are not listed by gender, all of the names are together. The author should have at least put a symbol by the name for gender. Researching names is confusing enough without trying to figure out the gender it was intended for, especially when the names are from other countries and cultures.
I love the meaning of names and this book also adds a Bible scripture with each name along with the meaning. This year I've been making birthday cards for the people in our church with their name, meaning, and scripture on it. A very easy and inexpensive gift that has personal meaning for them.
Made the front of the card with their name, meaning, and scripture in a way that they can frame it if they wish to. I chose this book over books about choosing baby names as I was teaching two classes on the "Names of God. Also notes of Biblical roots of their names - if there were any.
This name book wasn't exactly what I was expecting. Had it been viewable before I bought it I would have kept looking. Otherwise it is as it says 10 names,. After searching three other baby name books that each boasted 20, names or more - one even had more than 50, from around the world and finding nothing that worked for our first child, I borrowed this book from a friend and found the perfect name.
The name my husband and I chose wasn't in any of the other books. The same thing happened to the friend who lent me The Name Book - she has never found her first-born's name in another baby name book. The meanings in The Name Book are lovely, and the spelling variations allow parents to personalize names to their own tastes. Even though we knew the sex of our baby before she was born, it was still nice to have the boy and girl and unisex names listed together - it just gives you more options and it's easier to read.
I'm ordering my own copy of the book since we're expecting our second child this year.
By the way, my lending friend is done having children - but she's keeping the book just because it's so wonderful! If you or someone you love is expecting a baby, this is a very good book to purchase especially if you are having difficulties in deciding upon a name. You surely can find the perfect name here. If you can't, then you have some sort of unusual problem.
We bought this book for a young, expecting relative and she did find the best name imaginable. One person found this helpful. It was a great gift given to a friend. I have a friend who when ever we see each other we make up a new name to call each other. It started with her calling me someone else's name and from then on we called each other crazy names.
